Our top 3 places for hiking and camping in Sweden
Sweden offers some of the most picturesque and diverse hiking trails in the world. From the rugged coastline of the north to the serene landscapes of the south, hikers are treated to an array of stunning vistas and unique experiences.
Sweden has a law called “Allemansrätten”, allowing you to hike, camp, pick mushrooms and berries almost everywhere, making it the perfect destination for all outdoor enthusiasts. Please note there are some exceptions, so please check guidelines before visiting your chosen location. Always respect other people, animals and remember to not leave any litter.
This blog post will guide you through three of our all-time favourite locations from the north to the south: Höga Kusten, Bohuskusten, and Österlen. The mentioned distance and time for the hiking trails in these areas is the total, all of the trails can be adapted and sectioned off to fit your experience or requirements.
Höga Kusten
Located in the northern part of Sweden, Höga Kusten (The High Coast) is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic cliffs, deep forests, and ancient rock formations. The Höga Kustenleden trail offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure, with panoramic views of the Baltic Sea and a rich history dating back to the Ice Age. Along the 128km long trail, which takes approximately 7 days to hike, you will also find several beautiful camping spots to rest for the night. We would recommend this hike for a more experienced hiker, as the elevation and distance can be a challenge during some parts of the trail.
Bohuskusten
Moving to the west coast, Bohuskusten is famous for its rugged archipelago, charming fishing villages, beech woods, and historic landmarks. The Bohuskustenleden trail provides hikers with a blend of coastal beauty and cultural heritage, as well as the best opportunities to take a swim and cool off along the way. The 74km long trail starts at Brodalen and ends in Ramsvik and takes approximately 5 days to complete. We would recommend the trail for anyone that loves the ocean and appreciates swimming, especially during warm summer days.
Österlen
Located in the south is one of the most popular hiking trails Österlenleden, winding it’s way through the picturesque region of Skåne. Known for its open canola fields, beautiful beaches, and idyllic countryside, this trail offers a peaceful and scenic hike. Along the 93km trail, you'll encounter quaint villages, ancient castles, apple orchards and the gentle beauty of Sweden's southern coast. The Österlenleden takes approximately 5-7 days to hike and has plenty of ideal places to camp. Due to the landscape being relatively flat the trails are ideal for both beginner and the experienced hiker.
